Experience the thrill of seeing first-hand some of Costa Rica’s most magnificent and majestic visitors: the Humpback Whales. These seasonal visitors arrive to give birth and breed during two distinct seasons. With any luck, you will be able to see these incredible whales along with some other marine animals not far from the Southern Costa Rican shoreline of Ballena Bay.
Starting at the facilities of Ballena Aventura, you will be provided with some fresh fruit and drink before taken to your boat. Your first stop will be either at the “Whale Tail” or Tombolo of Punta Uvita, Ballena Island, where you will be able to see some of the unique migratory and resident birds that inhabit this area. If conditions are right, you’ll also get the chance to enjoy a swim and/or snorkel in the refreshing waters of the pacific ocean. From here, you’ll move on to the other beaches that make up this national park including Uvita Beach, Colonia Beach, Arco Beach, Ballena Beach and Pinuela Beach, along with a visit of the famous and spectacular complex of Ventanas Caverns.
Throughout the journey, your experience crew will be on the look out for some of the spectacular visitors to this bay, starting with the magnificent Humpback Whales. During two seasons, these whales come in mass to either breed or give birth and raise their young in the relative safety of the warm tropical oceans of Costa Rica.
Additionally, the team will also be on the lookout for dolphins that frequent these waters year round including Bottlenose Dolphins and the Pantropical Spotted Dolphin. If you’re lucky, you may even encounter the Rough-toothed Dolphin or False Killer Whale.
Finally, you will return to the Uvita Beach Station, where your tour will conclude.
