Journey to one of the most unique and biodiverse areas of Costa Rica which attracts tourists from far and wide on our Tortuguero Tour from San Jose. Enjoy a journey through the north east of the country through lush, green rainforests and board a river boat through the jungle where you’ll be able to spot a vast variety of forest dwelling animals that call this area home. Upon arrival of into the quaint village of Tortuguero, enjoy a delicious lunch and a guided walk through the township nestled between the vast Tortuguero river and the Carribbean sea.
Your tour starts from your accommodation in San Jose where your guide will transport north-east through lush, dense cloud forest of the Braulio Carrillo National Park. This is an area of untamed beauty and on a clear day you will be afforded incredible sights as densely packed rolling hills covered in stunning greenery as you descend from the Central Valley. Next up will be a stop at a restaurant to enjoy a typical, delicious Costa Rican breakfast before continuing on through numerous banana plantations, which your guide will be sure to explain the history, growing and harvesting of one of Costa Rica’s export.
Once you have arrived at the docks of La Pavona in the northern Limon province, this is where the excitement begins as you board your boat which transports you through winding rivers through the dense jungle of the Caribbean. These shallow rivers snake their ways through the forests where towing trees and jungle canopy stretches out on either side of you. It is here where you might be lucky enough to see river turtles, basilisks, iguanas, monkeys, caimans, toucans, egrets, herons, sloths and much more. Before long you will exit the narrow jungle rivers on to the long, vast Tortuguero river where you will make your way to the village and Tortuguero National Park.
Upon arrival you will be treated to a delicious buffet lunch where you can eat your fill. Afterwards, your guide will take you on a tour of the village and teach you about its unique history and its inhabitants. This a great opportunity to take photos and pick up a souvenir or two. As the township borders with the national park, there will be plenty of opportunities to see even more animals including monkeys, toucans and, if you’re lucky, the great green macaws which are critically endangered in many parts of Central America but happen to flourish here in Tortuguero.
After enjoying some leisure time to explore the township, you will then take the boat back to La Pavona and then drive back to San Jose where your tour will conclude.
