Situated close to Tamarindo to the north is Playa Grande, home to the Las Baulas National Marine Park. This area is rich in biodiversity and home to many species of native animals. From the Tamarindo River, you can take a boat tour up the estuary and mangroves to encounter all sorts of incredible inhabitants including crocodiles, monkeys, iguanas, and more.  Las Baulas National Marine Park is also an important nesting sight for the endangered leatherback turtles. Tours are available to witness nesting turtles during the months of October to May. If you are lucky, you may just see the worlds largest sea turtles come to the shores to lay their eggs.
